The Roots of Djembe
Tracing as far back as 500 AD from the Malinke tribe of West Africa, the instrument has had many uses over the course of history. Some of the earliest practices included thrumming a beat to communicate to different tribes across far distances.
The history and culture is recorded in the rhythms of drumming. In our Djembe course, apart of learning the dynamic rhythms, it's as important to understand the cultural tradition associated with the particular rhythm. Ceremonial customs, harvests, tapping into the spiritual realm and of course... Celebrating life!
About Makha
Born and raised in Senegal, West Africa. Makha grew up playing the DJEMBE, a traditional West African hand drum, as well as other African percussions. Makha’s hometown, Goree Island, a place with rich African cultural heritage preservation, is well-known as a popular landmark for musicians and dancers to pursue further study in West African arts and culture.
20+ years ago, Makha was invited to perform and conduct workshops in Hong Kong and mainland China. As a pioneer, Makha has established the African Drumming and Dance Connection Company in 2005 and SANKOFA (Hong Kong African Arts & Culture Association).
